NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDERS AND EPILEPSY INPATIENT WARD (WARD B)

The inpatient ward of Neurodegenerative Disorders and Epilepsy of the 1st Department of Neurology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens at Eginition Hospital, is a specialized structure that treats patients with cognitive and movement disorders, as well as epileptic syndromes.

The Department has a capacity of 12 beds in 5 chambers. Moreover it is equipped with a Long Video-Electroencephalography Recording Facility with 2 beds.

The scope of the Department is to investigate and manage patients with cognitive and / or movement disorders as well as primary epilepsy syndromes. To this goal, ward B cooperates with:

a) The Clinical Neuropsychology Unit, for targeted neuropsychological evaluation.

(b) The Radiology and Medical Imaging Research Unit of the Evgenidion Foundation and the Neuroimaging Unit of the Eginition Hospital, aiming to employ advanced imaging techniques for patient investigation.

c) The Neurochemistry and Biological Markers Unit, for the analysis of the CSF classical biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, both at the clinical level, but also at the research level, for new biomarker development and validation.

d) The Clinical Neurophysiology Unit, for the neurophysiological approach of patients.

(e) The Neurogenetics Unit, aiming to investigate a possible underlying genetic substrate of hereditary disorders

f) The Gastrointestinal Clinic of the General Hospital "Alexandra" for the application of interventional or non-interventional therapeutic methods in patients with Parkinson's disease (subcutaneous administration of apomorphine, intestinal administration of duo-dopa).

g) The Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, aiming at a holistic therapeutic approach of patients.

Ward B is closely connected with the Outpatient Clinics for rare dementias, Parkinson’s Disease and atypical Parkinsonian syndromes , Parkinson’s disease interventional management as well as Epilepsy.

Additionally it provides theoretical and clinical training of medical students and neurology and psychiatry residents as well as postgraduate neuropsychology students. It participates in the Postgraduate Program of the Department analyzing interesting case reports, video screenings, presentations of the special research activities of the scientific staff, etc.

Ward B publishes research papers, and supports dissertations and doctoral theses in the aforementioned scientific subjects.
