NEUROREHABILITATION UNIT

UNIT OF NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION

The Unit of Neurological Rehabilitation deals with the rehabilitation of patients with neurological diseases, which include mainly Stroke, Demyelinating Diseases and Parkinson’s Disease and related Movement Disorders. In the process of rehabilitation, allied health professionals, such as Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologits, Social Workers, and Nursing staff with specialization in stress management, are employed. They are coordinated by a team of Neurologists dealing with each one of these neurological disorders, while there is also participation of an external team of Rehabilitation Physicians, through the collaboration with the Second Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the National Center of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Neurological Rehabilitation concerns at Eginitio Hospital mainly concerns in-patients with acute or more chronic neurological disorders. In these patients the Unit offers the possibility of Physical Therapy-Occupational therapy during their hospitalization, while, in the case of such need, there are efforts, in collaboration with the Social Services Department, for subsequent hospitalization in a Rehabilitation Center. In this process, the participation of Consult Services from the Second Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the National Center of Rehabilitation Medicine is crucial.

For patients with chronic neurological problems, the Unit offers, on an out-patient basis, various programs of rehabilitation that take place in the space of the Specialty out-patient Neurological Clinics. In these, there are included the rehabilitation of patients with aphasias, through special team sessions with coordinating Health personnel, as well as corresponding team sessions for patients with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease. Here as well, whenever this is necessary, there are referrals to Centers of Rehabilitation, either for programs of daily rehabilitation, or for in-patient rehabilitation, following consulting with the collaborating rehabilitation physicians.
