NEUROEPIDEMIOLOGY UNIT

The Neuroepidemiology Unit of the 1st Department of Neurology focuses on the study of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive disorders. It is centered on the Cognitive Disorders Outpatient Clinic, operating since 2004, and it performs research on the epidemiology of degenerative cognitive disorders.

Its clinical objective is the provision of specialized healthcare services to people with cognitive impairment and their caregivers. The services are offered by the integrated function of a multifaceted health care team of professionals and aim at  accurate diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of dementias.

The visit to the Clinic includes the following, all performed on the same day:

  • clinical examination by a neurologist,
  • neuropsychological assessment,
  • final consideration of the findings.

Due to this complete evaluation, the presence of the patient in the clinic could last several hours. If needed, patients are referred for blood tests, brain imaging with CT or MRI, lumbar puncture for measuring biomarkers, etc. In selected cases, hospitalization at the inpatient ward of cognitive and movement disorders (NB) may be necessary for further investigation.
