POLYSOMNOGRAPHY LAB

LABORATORY OF POLYSOMNOGRAPHY (PSG) AND NEUROLOGICAL SLEEP DISORDERS

CLINICAL SERVICES

General information
Polysomnography (PSG) is the simultaneous examination of several physiological parameters during night sleep.
The Lab provides PSG in patients of two categories:
(a) Patients hospitalized in Eginitio Hospital (1st Neurology or 1st Psychiatry Department).
(b) Patients followed up in the outpatient clinics of the Departments.
The most common indication for PSG is the investigation of sleep disorders. The causes of these disorders are usually either psychiatric (eg, insomnia), neurological (e.g. restless limb syndrome, epilepsy with seizures during sleep, REM Behavior Disorder -RBD, bruxism, etc.) or pulmonary (e.g. Sleep apnea) The Lab focuses on neurological sleep disorders. Psychiatric and Pulmonary Causes of Sleep Disorders are being investigated at the Sleep Study Unit of the 1st Department of Psychiatry of Eginitio.

Space & equipment
The PSGs are performed in a dedicated Room and bed, which is located in ward "NB" (ward of neurodegenerative disorders and epilepsy) and is shared with the Long-Term video-EEG Lab. The Lab is also closely linked to the Electroencephalography Laboratory.
    The main equipment includes:
a. EEG-PSG equipment:
 - Micromed Morpheus amplifier fitted to the patient with a case and a belt.
This amplifier includes, in addition to the EEG and ECG channels, special channels for measuring thoracic and abdominal respiration movements, oxygen saturation and respiratory flow.
 - Computer with dedicated software for recording and playing EEG and PSG signals, video & sound.
 - Video camera
 - Microphone
 - Infrared source for night illumination
b. Bed with protective railings
It protects patients from injury in the event of REM Behavior Disorder, epileptic seizure or other event.
