ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG) LAB

GENERAL INFORMATION

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a painless test with a normal recording time of 20-30 minutes.
The laboratory performs EEG in two patient categories:
(a) Patients in Eginitio Hospital (First Neurology & First Psychiatry Departments) or in the neighboring hospitals “Alexandra” General Hospital and “Aretaiio”.
(b) Patients followed in the First Neurology & First Psychiatry Departments.

The most common indications for EEG are:
(a) episodes of disturbance of consciousness or involuntary movements (especially if the episodes are suspected to be epileptic)
(b) precise characterization of epilepsy.
EEG is also useful in cases of encephalopathies and neurodegenerative diseases.
The EEG Lab is closely linked to the Long-term Video-Electroencephalography and Neurological Disorders Polysomnography Laboratories.

SPACE & EQUIPMENT
The lab area consists of three rooms. The room where ambulatory patient EEGs are performed is quiet and has an adjustable reclining chair to limit muscle artifacts and, if possible, help patients fall asleep during the exam. For non-ambulatory patients, a stretcher, on which EEG is performed, can fit in a second laboratory room.
There are two electroencephalographs in the laboratory:
a. Electroencephalograph with:
   - Micromed SAM 25FO Amplifier
   - Computer and software for EEG & image recording & playback
   - Source of Intermittent Photic Stimulation
   - Video camera
 b. Electroencephalograph with:
   - Micromed BQ132 amplifier
   - Computer and software for EEG recording & playback
   - Source of Intermittent Photic Stimulation
Auxiliary space for the laboratory is planned to become available on the ground floor of a three-storey building under construction on Papadiamantopoulou Street.
