 * Examinations are performed only after referral by physicians of Eginitio Hospital or patients hospitalized in Eginitio or in the neighboring hospitals Aretaieio and "Alexandra".

General information
Long video-electroencephalographic monitoring (or long-lasting video EEG) is a painless examination with usual duration of about 24 hours.
The laboratory provides long-term video-EEG in patients of two categories:
(a) Patients hospitalized in Eginitio Hospital (1st Neurology, 1st Psychiatry Departments) or in the neighboring hospitals Aretaieio and "Alexandra".
(b) Patients followed in the outpatient clinics of the above hospitals.
The most common indications for long-term video-EEG are similar to those of simple EEG, namely the investigation of episodes of consciousness disturbances or involuntary movements (especially if the episodes are suspected to be epileptic), as well as the more thorough investigation of epilepsy cases. It is usually used in selected cases where simple EEG does not provide sufficient information, especially when simultaneous video and EEG need to be recorded for optimal characterization of the episodes. Long-term video-EEG is also useful in cases of encephalopathies and neurodegenerative diseases of cognition and / or movement.

Space & equipment
The examinations are performed in a dedicated Room and bed, which is located in ward "NB" (ward of neurodegenerative disorders and epilepsy). The Unit is closely linked to the Electroencephalography Laboratory.
    The main equipment includes:
a. Electroencephalograph with:
 - Micromed SD LTM 32 amplifier fitted to the patient with a case and a belt.
 - Computer with dedicated software for recording and playing EEG signal, video & sound.
 - Video camera
 - Microphone
 - Infrared light source for clear image in the dark.
b. Bed with guardrails
It protects patients from injury in the event of an epileptic seizure or other event.
