INPATIENT WARD D - CNS AUTOIMMUNE / DEMYELINATING DISEASES
Ward D (ward of Demyelinating Diseases) of the First Department of Neurology, established in 2004, is accepting admissions for differential diagnosis and treatment of:
- Newly diagnosed patients with possible demyelinating diseases
- Patients with rare forms of multiple sclerosis, such as tumefactive demyelination and pediatric multiple sclerosis
- Patients with Neuromyelitis Optica and Neuromyelitis Optica spectrum disorders
- Patients with demyelinating disorders with anti MOG antibodies.
- Patients with Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica to be treated with specific internationally accepted monoclonal antibodies (Natalizumab, Rituximab, Ocrelizumab, Alemtuzumab)
- Patients with multiple sclerosis starting treatment with fingolimod.
- Patients treated with immunosuppressive treatments (mitoxantrone, cyclophosphamide)
- Patients with multiple sclerosis in relapse, with high disease activity
- Patients with multiple sclerosis, in severe relapse, unresponsive to corticosteroid treated requiring plasmapheresis, in collaboration with the Kidney Units of “Alexandra” and ”Areteion” University Hospitals
The Department is closely associated to the Unit of Short Stay and Clinical Studies and the Outpatient Clinic for Demyelinating Diseases.
Specific immune markers involved in the pathogenesis of the diseases and in neuronal degeneration are studied in collaboration with the Neuroimmunology Unit. Patients with monoclonal antibodies undergo peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations evaluation before (Natalizumab, Rituximab, Ocrelizumab, Alemtuzumab) and during treatment regimen (Rituximab, Ocrelizumab) with monoclonal antibodies
