Maria Anagnostouli studied at the Athens Medical School and completed her specialty in Neurology at the 1st Neurological Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Since the beginning of her specialty she has been involved in research protocols of the Clinical Research Laboratory, focusing on neuroimmunology and serological typing of Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLA), which have been associated with an increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases and especially with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the reference disease for all of her clinical and research activity. She completed her doctoral thesis on the determination of vitamin biotin, in serum and CSF in neurological patients, in collaboration with the Department of Immunopeptide Chemistry of the Research Center "DEMOKRITOS", whose conclusions were recently used for the MS therapeutics, as originally proposed by her. In 1998, after years of training in Athens tissue histocompatibility centers, her participation as a member of the European Federation of Immunogenetics (EFI) and her participation in the World Molecular HLA Workshop, at Professor Terasaki's Lab in Los Angeles she organized and operated autonomously the Research Immunogenetics Laboratory, in the Aeginition Hospital. For over ten years she has collaborated with doctoral candidates and postgraduate students who have either completed or advanced their doctoral theses on molecular HLA genotyping in distinguished and rare forms of MS, like familial MS, pediatric MS,tumefactive MS, NMOSD, periodontitis and other dental problems in patients with MS etc. For many years the HLA system has been also being studied in the Immunogenetics Laboratory and in common neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), but also other autoimmune neurological diseases such as myasthenia, GBS syndrome etc.
In 2011, She organized the first Panhellenic Conference dedicated solely to MS, in Greece, where she analyzed the value of the HLA system for the initiation and phenotypic characteristics of MS, but primarily for the decision making, regarding personalized treatment in the future. She has also organized 5 other conferences on Adult and Pediatric MS, neuroimmunology andimmunogenetics, as well as the first Workshop on Immunogenetics in Neurology, with prominent scientists in the Greek and Pan-European space, at the new site of the Laboratory of Immunogenetics of Aeginition Hospital.
