Ward and Unit of Short Stay and Clinical Studies (One Day Clinic)
The Unit of Short Stay and Clinical Studies of the First Dept of Neurology of the NKUA is operational since 2005. It is housed in a three-bed Ward at Eginitio Hospital, while there is also an Annex, temporarily in neighboring rented space, with 8 special adjustable hospital chairs. More than 600 patients per year are hospitalized in the Unit. The great majority of the patients suffer from Multiple Sclerosis.
Patients have a short stay of a few hours in the Unit, following a one-day admission for the following reasons: a) scheduled or unscheduled intravenous infusion of drugs as part of the management of their neurological condition b) monitoring of their response to therapies in a hospital environment, c) need of special examinations, such as lumbar puncture, d) participation in clinical or research protocols that necessitate monitoring or intensive laboratory or clinical examinations over a period of a few hours.
