DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL BIOPATHOLOGY

About the Department

The Department of Medical Biopathology encompasses the polyvalent specialty of Medical Biopathology / Laboratory Medicine (Laboratory Haematology, Immunology, Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiiology). It is one of the three Departments of the Aeginition Hospital together with the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Neurology.  

The infrastructure of the Laboratory consists of complete and up-to-date equipment for the diagnostic coverage of the neurologic and psychiatric patients, as well as for the development of research projects, doctoral theses and various scientific activities.

For laboratory diagnostics, only certified reagents, materials and laboratory equipment (CE - IVD) are used, in accordance with national and European Union legislation.

Organization and Divisions

Clinical Biochemistry: covers the full spectrum of general and specific diagnostic biochemical examinations (including lithium level determination, toxicologic antiepileptic drugs, hormonal tests and neoplasms).

Haematology: basic haematologic and haemostasis laboratory diagnostics

Microbiology: conventional microbiologic methods, molecular diagnostics of bacterial and viral infections of the Central Nervous System, immunologic diagnostics of infections.

Immunology - Neuroimmunology: General and specific tests of autoimmunity and neuroimmunology in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, viral infections, paraneoplastic syndromes, disorders of the blood-brain barrier, detection of oligoclonal antibodies in multiple sclerosis.

Practiced Methodology: Nephelometry, immunofluorescence, automated ELISA, enhanced chemiluminescence, electrophoresis and immunoblotting, Isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting (Western Blot).

Educational Activity

- The Laboratory offers physicians the full training in the medical specialty of Medical Biopathology (5 years). The training covers all the subfields of the specialty with rotation in the various individual laboratories, including night duties, theoretical lessons and short visits to laboratories of other hospitals for special topics.

-  At postgraduate level, doctoral theses are carried on for medical doctors, as well as for other scientific majors (biology, dentistry, nursing).

- At undergraduate level, since the academic year 2014-2015, the Department is in charge of the mandatory eligible lesson of Travel and International Medicine for the 7th, 9th and 11th semesters of medical students, under the supervision of Associate Professor Stylianos Chatzipanagiotou.

Research Activity

- Running of research projects and doctoral theses in the subjects of Immunology, Neuroimmunology, Psychoimmunology, Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Travel Medicine with publications indexed in peer reviewed scientific journals (MEDLINE / PUBMED).
