Dr Kapaki graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki in 1981. She completed her specialty at the Department of Neurology of the University of Athens (Eginition Hospital) where she qualified as a Neurologist in 1987. She started her Doctoral Dissertation entitled: “Study of trace elements Zn, Cu, Mn, and Mg in the cerebrospinal fluid and serum of patients with neurological disorders” at the same hospital and completed it in 1989 (Degree–cum laude).

In 1989, on completion of her doctoral thesis, she qualified as Doctor in Medicine of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUoA). In 1992 she was appointed to the position of Lecturer in Neurology, at the University's teaching hospital, Eginition. In 1994 she carried out postgraduate research as Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Neurochemistry, Institute of Neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University of London.

In 1997 she was elected full time Assistant Professor in Neurology in the Department of Neurology, Eginition Hospital, a position which became permanent in 2002. In 2005 she did additional postgraduate research as Invited Scientist at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Division of Psychiatry Research, Zurich.

In 2008 she was elected full time Associate Professor in Neurology at the A’ Department of Neurology, Eginition Hospital- and in 2015 she was elected full Professor in Neurology, position she holds to date.

She has been in charge of the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders and Epilepsy (since 2011) and of Neurochemistry Unit (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) since 1995.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

Dr. Kapaki has focused her interest on the neurodegenerative disorders especially on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Her recent research work is primarily in the field of biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and she participates in European and International collaborations.

She has published over 300 papers in International or National Journals or presented in Conferences. As an invited speaker she has participated in many National and International Congresses and she has also served as invited reviewer in National and International Journals.
