ΕΚΔΗΛΩΣΕΙΣ

Tο Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΠΜΣ) «Αγγλική Γλώσσα, Γλωσσολογία και Μετάφραση» του Τμήματος Αγγλικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας, σε συνεργασία με το Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΔΠΜΣ) «Μετάφραση: Ελληνική, Αγγλική, Ρωσική», διοργανώνει τη σειρά διαλέξεων «Σεμινάρια του ΠΜΣ/ΔΠΜΣ» σχετικά με θεματικές που αφορούν τη γλώσσα, τη γλωσσολογία και τη μετάφραση.

Η επόμενη διάλεξη για το Εαρινό εξάμηνο θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη, 3 Ιουνίου στις 12 μμ στην Αίθουσα 209 της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής. Θα ακολουθήσει κέρασμα.

"Why do we use the same words when we disagree with each other? Two studies of conversational alignment"

Conversational alignment, or the reuse of ideas and constructions from prior speaker turns, is a compelling type of meaning negotiation, dialogue management, and stance coordination in everyday face-to-face conversation.In this talk, I present the findings of two studies of alignment – a corpus study and an experimental study – examining the social and cognitive aspects underpinning this behaviour, and the extent to which the findings are replicated across the two methodological approaches. Corpus data point to the mitigating function of alignment in disagreement situations. However, in our experimental study participants rated aligned responses as signalling less social closeness than non-aligned ones. I will critically examine the reasons for the diverging results, including the difficulty of simulating natural conversation in experimental settings – and the validity of the overhearer paradigm – and propose a way of integrating the two perspectives to advance our understanding of conversational alignment.
